Strategic Fit

Therma's 2019 acquisition of Yearout Mechanical in Albuquerque demonstrated their appetite for geographic expansion beyond California — adding tenured crews with strong local relationships in markets they couldn't build organically. Air Control in McLean represents the same thesis applied to the East Coast, a geography Therma has no current presence in despite EQT's clear mandate to scale the platform nationally.

Air Control's federal and government-contractor customer relationships in the DC metro align directly with Therma's positioning as a high-performance commercial mechanical contractor. The cleared-facility and energy efficiency retrofit work that Air Control has built in Northern Virginia is precisely the contract base that supports EQT's broader energy transition thesis — and there is no Therma or Legence presence in the DC corridor to compete against yet.

Therma added 39 people last year, an 8.2% headcount jump — if technician recruiting is that aggressive organically, acquiring a tenured Mid-Atlantic crew with existing customer relationships and clearances is a materially faster path to East Coast capacity than organic hiring alone. Air Control provides immediate market entry without a multi-year ramp.

Approach Strategy

Call Opener

"Congrats on the Yearout integration — adding Albuquerque to the Therma footprint in 2019 looked like a smart geographic play. We're working with a similar-profile mechanical shop in McLean that could do the same thing for you on the East Coast."

1
Legence is positioning as Blackstone's Energy Transition Accelerator — we have a target in the DC metro whose federal building-efficiency contracts fit that thesis perfectly, and there's no Legence presence in the corridor yet. First mover matters here.
2
Therma added 39 people last year, an 8.2% headcount jump — if technician recruiting is that aggressive organically, acquiring a tenured Mid-Atlantic crew with existing clearances and customer relationships might be a faster path.
3
EQT's mandate for Therma is national scale — Air Control provides an immediate beachhead in the DC metro, one of the densest commercial HVAC markets in the country, without the 2–3 year ramp of a greenfield office build.
